Maehongson
Maehongson is well known as the hill tribe trekking region and a must if you enjoy culture, scenery, exploring and of course trekking. The area is covered with densely forested slopes and inhabited by differing minority groups. The main ethnic group here are the Shan people who originate from Burma. Other ethnic tribes include the Hmong, Yao and Lahu.
Due to its location far North and mountainous landscape, Maehongson is much cooler than the South of the country and mist often covers the skyline. The region is also right next to the border with Burma, although this does not mean the area is unsafe to visit, far from it!
Maehongson can be reached by windy road from Chaing Mai (although not good for the car sick travellers out there) or by air. Although it’s as far North as you can get in Thailand and can seem remote, you’ll see a completely different side to Thailand and gain an understanding into the rich cultural heritage the country has to offer.
Our childcare and children’s home development volunteers can live in Maehongson.
