About UsPhuket

Phuket is a beach lover’s dream. It’s Thailand’s largest island and is often dubbed the pearl of the Andaman. Unfortunately over development has caused some parts of Phuket to become rather brash and tacky – but dig beneath the exterior and Phuket still has plenty of charm to offer.

Phuket is located in the Southwest of Thailand and is easily reached by bus, ferry or air. Phuket itself can be navigated by hiring a moped or hopping on one of many local buses that drive around the island day and night.

Phuket Old Town still retains its architectural beauty, and the night markets are fun to explore. However Phuket’s main attractions are its power white beaches, amazing diving, tranquil bays and tropical forests.

Being a prime tourist destination, Phuket has plenty more to offer that volunteers can take advantage of including clubbing, golf, boat trips around the island, thai boxing matches, visiting temples and Chalong’s big Buddha. There’s also the vegetarian festival held in early October – the Chinese community’s event to abstain from meat for nine days to improve their health and well being. Be prepared for lots of bizarre behaviour – fire walking, body mutilation and body piercing!

Our gibbon rehabilitation and dog rescue volunteers live in Phuket as do our childcare volunteers.

Child Watch

Volunteer with Children

Starfish is working with an organisation called Child Watch on the island of Phuket. The centre is a valuable resource of the poor local community. The centre supports poor working parents providing a safe environment for their children. Most days there are 50 kids aged 5 or under. All full of energy, you will have your hands full but have a lot of fun.

Dog Rescue

Volunteer with Animals

Calling all animal lovers: Phuket’s Dog Rescue Centre needs your help. This canine care centre is run by an English man John and is home for some 400 stray dogs, all of whom are in need of new, loving owners. The animals are well looked after but your help is needed with the day-to-day care of the dogs and to assist with fundraising so as to keep the Dog Rescue Centre fully active.

Gibbon Rehabilitation

Wildlife Volunteering

Starfish Ventures has formed a partnership with a Thai government organisation to assist in rehabilitating gibbons rescued from the tourist industry. Volunteers will learn all about gibbons and how they will support the centre’s work during their two week induction.
